Ketosis occurs when your body runs out of its energy source mainly Glucose. Glucose comes from Sugar and Carbs so all starchy foods like potatoes, bread, pasta etc. When your body is in a state of ketosis it needs to use a different fuel source. Ketosis breaks down fats your body has stored for energy like the ones on your stomach, behind and thighs and uses them to keep you fueled!
During your first week Banting getting into a state of ketosis is your main goal. Once you get there you want to stay there for as long as possible. Why? Because the longer you are in ketosis the more weight you will lose. While you are in ketosis your body will need lots of water and you need to stay hydrated at all times.
To get into ketosis fast eating only 20 carbs a day will get you there in only 3-5 days, if you are a beginner 50g carbs are a little easier to keep up with and you will go into ketosis in just 5-7 days. One natural sign that you are in Ketosis is bad breath, the ladies on the banting pages call it Acid breath. This is due to your body burning fat. Its not a hygiene condition so brushing your teeth and extra couple of times won’t help for this is just a part of Banting. Chew on some mint leaves to help mask the smell or use mouthwash before important meetings or appointments.
